Refrigerants, including the pervasive hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), have improved our lives by providing us with a relatively safe means of cooling our buildings and our food; however, relative to carbon dioxide, refrigerants have about 2,000 times more global warming potential. Water is typically a poor refrigerant due to the high-pressure ratio required for condensing, so it is usually used for evaporative cooling in open systems like swamp coolers and cooling towers. These technologies are best applied in drier climates as cooling is limited by the dew point of outside air.
